For years I’ve been waiting for a mainstream producer to make a desktop that looks anywhere near as good as an Apple product. I don’t use a Mac, but credit where its due, their designs are amazing. Minimalist and functional.

Now HP comes along with this gem, the HP All in One 200 series Desktop PC running Windows 7. It’s as close to an Apple inspired product design as Ive seen, albeit in black. No white option, Apple must have cornered the market on white plastic.

The 200-5000 series comes in two variants, the 5020a $1199 and 5040a $1399. The $1199 machine can be found at Officeworks if you want to go have a play. HP also offer touch screen models, don’t bother with them. The operating systems haven’t caught up to the touch screen interface yet. At a retail price point of $1399 for the 5040a model, I believe its great buying.

I should say right here, I really like these machines for home or business. Featuring a small desktop footprint and large screen they are like a laptop standing upright.

Processing power is up there with the Intel Core 2 Duo processors, DDR3 Ram and a 750Gb Hard drive on the 200-5040a.

The 21.5″ screen is powered by the Intel X4500 HD chipset which means it will play DVD’s and HD movies no problem, it just wont like playing 3D shoot em up games.

For modern office environments they offer plenty of performance, especially in the 5040a variant. The E7500 will be perfect for running Office, MYOB and the occasional session with Adobe Photoshop. The Core 2 Duo processors are the outgoing line (being replaced by the i3/5/7) but I don’t see this as an issue as the chipset is stable and has proven its reliability.

In the box you will find a wired keyboard and mouse. Its pretty standard fair here, they do the job nicely. Wireless would have been better but in an office environment the wired give less hassle.

Build quality is the usually great HP standard. The systems feature built in webcam, microphone and speakers plus the benefit of an integrated wireless N module so you can connect without wires to your home broadband network. (this is not a built in 3g module)

The 21.5″ screen is a semi-matte finish which minimises reflections giving you a clear view of your working environment. No more of that shifting position to get the fluoro lighting off your screen.

The operating system is Windows 7 Home Premium. Microsoft did a great job with Windows 7 which needs a blog post all to itself. Have no fear migrating from Windows XP to 7. I have found most business applications designed for XP will run fine on Windows 7, and if not, there is always the ‘Virtual XP’ mode.
